IEA Says It’s yet to Write to Political Parties about Debate

Mahama's campaign team last week said they had not been informed about the debate and proceeded to accuse the IEA of conspiring with the ruling New Patriotic Party to manipulate the electoral process

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) says even though it announced readiness to host presidential and vice presidential debates ahead of the elections, it has yet to extend invitations to presidential aspirants.

In a statement on Monday, the think-tank said it had intended to follow its July 17 press release (announcing the debate arrangement) with individual letters to the candidates inviting them to the debates and other activities.

“Respectfully, in our Press Release of 17th July 2024, the IEA did not indicate that it had engaged or informed any Political Party or Presidential Candidate to participate in the Debates,” the statement said in response to accusations from opposition candidate, John Mahama’s campaign.

“As it always does, the IEA will be writing to the Presidential Candidates inviting them to
participate in the Debates and other activities. It is our sincere hope that all Presidential and Vice-Presidential Candidates will participate in the planned programme.”
