Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang was earlier in February announced as Mahama’s running-mate for the December elections.

She joins the race as one to have already had the experience of actively running a presidential election campaign after she was selected last four years as John Mahama’s number 2.

Before this current selection, several names, including president of the Asogli traditional area, Togbe Afede, former chief of staff, Julius Debrah, former trade minister, Spio Gabrah, former NDC parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West, Awuah Darko among others were tipped to be part of John Mahama’s numerous options ahead of the December polls.

But having chosen Naana Opoku Agyemang signals that the NDC may be serious about playing the gender ticket. As the party’s first female running-mate, she stands to be Ghana’s first woman Vice President if Mahama wins the general elections in December. Her selection may also be attributed to the unspoken rule of the Central Regional factor when it comes to choosing running-mates within the party.
